Background

We are conducting a research project on online work in Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia. The project aims to improve our understanding of the Internet’s impacts on social and economic development. The results will help policy makers, firms and individuals dealing with technological change. More information on the project is available at

What we ask from you

If you live in Sub-Saharan Africa or Southeast Asia and have done work through Freelancer or a similar platform, we would like you to respond to our online survey. The questions asked in the survey focus on your experiences of online work and your everyday life and background. The survey takes about 30-60 minutes to complete. We will pay you $3 for completing the survey (please log exactly one hour of manual time so that we can pay you this amount). Please respond to the questions as accurately as you can.

How we use the information you give us

We will analyse the information you and other respondents give to us, and report our conclusions in academic publications, presentations and blog posts. Your responses are not linked to your name or Freelancer account, and we will not reveal your identity to anyone outside the research group. Any personal information you give to us will be kept confidential and held securely in accordance with the 1998 UK Data Protection Act.

Who is behind this project

This research project is conducted by a team of academics led by Professor Mark Graham ( (at) ). We are based at the University of Oxford in England, and at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. This survey is run by Dr Vili Lehdonvirta ( (at) ) assisted by Ilinca Barsan ( (at) ) and Liinus Hietaniemi ( (at) ). The project is funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) in Canada.

If you change your mind or have concerns

Your participation in this survey is voluntary. If you change your mind after accepting the job, you can simply drop out. We won’t ask any questions and we won’t leave a bad review or otherwise penalize you. Should you wish to withdraw your responses from the survey after completing it, please contact Liinus via email (see above).

The University of Oxford’s Central University Research Ethics Committee (CUREC) has reviewed our plans and given us permission to do this research. However, if you think we have somehow mistreated you, or if you have concerns about your participation, please get in contact with Liinus so we can talk about it.
