Htaccess rewrite for danish characters

My client has had a site change from Drupal to WordPress. The old Drupal used special danish characters “øæå” in the slugs / urls. This is a problem as I cannot 301 redirect them.
I have tried to 301 redirect the following:
/svømmeudstyr to /svoemmeudstyr
/sv%C3%B8mmeudstyr to /svoemmeudstyr
Neither of these work.
I need you to write me a htaccess section or a php script that rewrites incoming urls as:
“å” = “aa”
“ø” = “oe”
“æ” = “ae”
So that everything redirects correctly.
