Resize Wordpress thumbnail images when image is uploaded

I have a WordPress website where users can create a listing and upload images. However users can upload images with different sizes. WordPress then crop the images instead of scaling it.
1) I want to prevent the images from being cropped and use a scaled thumbnail
2) I tried some plaguing but was not successful. Feel free to use a plug-i. Or code action in functions.php.I just do not have time to keep trying plugins
3) also the listing page has slider that shows all images of the listing the user added. I want to change the slider.
